HEROES 4 HUNGER

WCAP’s Heroes 4 Hunger program works in partnership with hundreds of volunteers, civic groups, town officials, and firemen to distribute more than 900 boxes of food for Thanksgiving and more than 1,000 boxes of food at Christmas to Waldo County families in need.

HOW DO I GET A FOOD BOX?

Waldo County residents who are in need of a food basket need to fill out a Neighbor for Neighbor application. Assignment to Heroes 4 Hunger is not guaranteed. Your family may be served by another local organization. For more information, see “Neighbor for Neighbor”. Some application locations include:

  • WCAP Fuel Assistance Office
  • Waldo County Head Start
  • Your town office
  • Your child’s school

After the application process is complete, you will receive a postcard in the mail informing you of the time and date your food basket will be delivered to you. If you marked on your application that you would prefer to pick your food basket up, information on where to pick it up and what time you may do so will be provided on your post card.

HOW CAN I VOLUNTEER?

This project is dependent on volunteers. Last year, there were over 300 volunteers who donated their time to make this project happen. Volunteers are needed to help pack boxes two separate Saturdays each year (usually the Saturday before Thanksgiving and the Saturday before Christmas), to help carry boxes to the cars of those who come to pick up, and to deliver boxes to the homes of those who are unable to come pick up their box. Check back soon for a link to the online volunteer registration form, usually posted mid-October.

NEIGHBOR FOR NEIGHBOR

Neighbor for Neighbor Coalition is a group of area agencies and organizations who act as a clearinghouse for holiday projects throughout Waldo County. This program ensures that resources are shared and unduplicated so that the maximum number of families possible are helped during the holiday season.

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR FOOD OR GIFTS?

Waldo County residents who are in need of a box of food for the holidays and/or help with gifts for their children can fill out a Neighbor for Neighbor application. Once an application is filled out, a local organization that provides food and/or gifts will serve your family. Please note: since more households sign up than local organizations have resources to help, filling out an application does not guarantee service. Please do your best to fill out your application early in the season. Applications become first available mid-September each year. Neighbor for Neighbor will notify a household as soon as possible to let them know whether or not their family was adopted for food and/or gifts or if they will need to seek out other resources. Applications for Neighbor for Neighbor are available at the following locations:

  • WCAP Fuel Assistance Office
  • Waldo County Head Start & Early Head Start
  • Town Offices
  • School Nurses
  • Searsport Food Cupboard
  • Belfast Soup Kitchen
  • GBAM Food Cupboard
  • Volunteer Regional Food Pantry
  • Crossroads to Calvary Church
  • Broadreach Family & Community Services
  • SequelCare
  • Acadia Healthcare
  • Ascentria Community Services
  • Maine Behavioral Healthcare
  • Employment Services of Maine
  • Maine Families
  • Sweetser
  • Senior College

After the application process is complete, you will receive a postcard in the mail informing you of the time and date your food basket will be delivered to you. If you marked on your application that you would prefer to pick your food basket up, information on where to pick it up and what time you may do so will be provided on your post card.

HOW DOES MY ORGANIZATION JOIN NEIGHBOR FOR NEIGHBOR?

Joining Neighbor for Neighbor comes with a lot of benefits. Work is more fulfilling knowing that your efforts are not being duplicated. Membership is free and WCAP Neighbor for Neighbor staff handle data entry, telephone calls, contact information upkeep, and mailings for all Neighbors for Neighbors members as much or as little as they wish. Waldo County organizations and groups that provide holiday projects such as food and toy giveaways may become a part of the Neighbor for Neighbor Coalition by contacting Tabitha Lowe at 338-6809 ext. 115 or by e-mailing tlowe@waldocap.org

CINDERELLA PROJECT OF MAINE

The Cinderella Project is the ultimate recycling project. It is a prom dress giveaway program for high school students throughout the state of Maine to promote positive body image and increased self-esteem. New or gently used prom dresses are available in the spring for any girl attending a prom. The gowns are free, with the promise that the high school student receiving the gown will pay it forward, either by volunteering in her community or donating the dress back to the project for another student to have the following year. Accessories such as jewelry and bags are available as well. For more information, please visit cinderellaprojectofmaine.org.

HOW DO I GET A PROM GOWN?

Any high school student who is in need of a prom gown from the Cinderella Project of Maine can get a dress by showing up on the giveaway day to pick one out. The giveaway day for this project usually occurs the first Saturday in April in Belfast and the second Saturday in April in Gardiner. Visit the Cinderella Project of Maine’s website by clicking here, or become a fan on Facebook by clicking here for more information, or to be informed of when the next giveaway day will be.

HOW DO I DONATE A GOWN?

We accept any and all new or gently used gowns. All donations of gowns, jewelry, bags, or anything else can be brought to WCAP’s main office or any Day’s Jewelers in the State of Maine. Some girls even bring a prom gown to the giveaway so other girls can benefit from their dresses next year. For a full list of drop off locations, visit cinderellaprojectofmaine.org/donate.

HOW CAN I VOLUNTEER?

Volunteers for the Cinderella Project of Maine, also known as “Fairy Godmothers” include people who help out on the giveaway day, seamstresses, and people who serve on the projects planning board. To read more about how you can volunteer your time for this project, click here.
